Tumeremo
Tumeremo, Bolívar, Venezuela
Description
Tumeremo was born in 1788 as the Mission of Our Lady of Bethlehem, founded by the Catalan Capuchin friars at the gateway to the Guayana savannas. As the capital of Sifontes Municipality, in the southeast of Bolívar state, this town of missionary roots preserves the rugged character of the frontier and has become a place of passage and connection toward the deepest and least explored areas of the country. Tumeremo is, above all, a land of hardworking people shaped by the savanna and by the promise of gold.
According to the national census, Sifontes Municipality recorded 50,082 inhabitants (INE, «2011 Census», accessed 2026). Its economy traditionally revolves around agriculture and livestock, although gold mining is the activity that most defines daily life in the area, drawing a large part of the population toward the region's extractive work.
