Where the Caroní River delivers its waters to the Orinoco, Puerto Ordaz was born, a planned city that is, above all, a child of Venezuelan industrial effort. Founded in 1952 as a base to exploit the iron of Cerro Bolívar, it is named in honor of the conquistador Diego de Ordaz, the first European to sail up the Orinoco. Together with neighboring San Félix it forms Ciudad Guayana, in Bolívar state, and within that pairing Puerto Ordaz is the more modern face: wide avenues, parks beside the Caroní falls and an urban layout designed to grow.
