On the banks of the Yocoima River, Upata has the serenity of towns steeped in history and the pride of those who call it «the city I learned to love». Founded on July 7, 1762 by friar Antonio de Cervera as Villa de San Antonio de Padua del Yocoima, its Indigenous name means «my land» or «the place I dwell», a declaration of belonging still alive among its people. As the capital of the Piar municipality in Bolívar state, Upata is the third most populous city in the region and a natural connection point between Ciudad Guayana, Ciudad Bolívar and the agricultural and mining heart of Guayana. Its calm, hospitable character sets it apart in southern Venezuela.
Upata is the capital and most important town of the Piar municipality, which records around 125,000 inhabitants according to the National Institute of Statistics for 2023.
