Few cities carry as much historical weight as Ciudad Bolívar, the former Angostura overlooking the spot where the Orinoco narrows to barely a kilometer wide. Founded in 1764 as Santo Tomé de Guayana de Angostura, it was the capital of the province and the seat of the historic Congress of Angostura of 1819, where the foundations of Gran Colombia were laid.
