San Félix is the historical root of Ciudad Guayana, the old settlement from which the entire modern city of southern Venezuela sprang. Founded on November 20, 1724 by Catalan Capuchins under the name Purísima Concepción de Suay, it was the stage of the decisive Battle of San Félix in 1817, one of the patriot victories that shaped independence. Located on the eastern bank, where the Caroní meets the Orinoco, San Félix forms, together with Puerto Ordaz, the greater Ciudad Guayana in Bolívar state.
