Trujillo is the capital of the state of the same name, one of the oldest and most history-laden cities of the Venezuelan Andes, set in the so-called Valley of the Mukas at about 834 meters above sea level. Founded in 1557 by Diego García de Paredes, it underwent several relocations before being permanently established on October 27, 1570 as Trujillo de Nuestra Señora de la Paz. Its name is etched into the independence struggle: it was here, on June 15, 1813, that the Liberator Simón Bolívar signed the famous Decree of War to the Death.
