Nestled in the Andes of southwestern Venezuela, San Cristóbal is a mountain city with a warm soul and a fervent tradition. Founded on March 31, 1561, by captain Juan Maldonado Ordóñez y Villaquirán, it survived the early years of indigenous attacks under the invoked protection of Saint Sebastian, and in 1856 it was named the capital of the newly created Táchira state. Famous for its San Sebastián Fair, its proud local identity and its proximity to the Colombian border, San Cristóbal is the great connection point of the Venezuelan Andes, where the coffee, culture and commerce of the whole region come together.
