Description
In the mountains of western Táchira, very close to the Colombian border, Capacho is actually the sum of two sister towns: Capacho Nuevo and Capacho Viejo, capitals of the Independencia and Libertad municipalities respectively. After the devastating earthquake of May 18, 1875, the population resettled in its current location, formerly known as Colinas de Blanquizal. With a cool climate and a hardworking spirit, Capacho preserves Andean traditions, craftsmanship and a deeply rooted identity, and serves as an everyday connection point between the localities of the Táchira highlands and nearby San Cristóbal.
Capacho Nuevo is the capital of the Independencia municipality, which spans 64 km² and recorded about 47,114 inhabitants according to 2023 INE estimates; its neighbor Capacho Viejo is the capital of the Libertad municipality, with a surface area of 152 km² and about 31,275 inhabitants in 2023 (Wikipedia, «Municipio Independencia (Táchira)», accessed 2026).
