Rubio is the capital of the Junín municipality, in the southwestern region of Táchira state, and one of the cities with the greatest historical and cultural weight in the Venezuelan Andes. Founded in 1749 by Don Gervasio Rubio Vargas, it grew around the "La Yegüera" estate and the cultivation of coffee, which would forever shape its identity. Known as "the city of bridges" because of a town linked by bridges since its origins, Rubio preserves colonial houses and corridors that tell its rich history, establishing itself as a key connection point on the Táchira border.
In 2014, the urban area of Rubio had 80,680 inhabitants according to INE data, making it the third most populated city in Táchira state (Wikipedia, "Rubio (Venezuela)", accessed 2026).
