La Grita
La Grita, Táchira, Venezuela
Description
La Grita is one of the cities of greatest cultural and religious heritage in Táchira state, nestled at more than 1,400 meters of altitude in the heart of the Venezuelan Andes. Founded in 1576 by captain Francisco de Cáceres as Valle del Espíritu Santo de La Grita, it is fondly known as «the Athens of Táchira» and as a sanctuary city, the destination of massive pilgrimages to the Santo Cristo. Declared the supplementary capital of the state, La Grita preserves its Andean character and serves as a vibrant cultural and commercial connection point in the region.
La Grita holds a population of around 88,450 inhabitants, a figure that rises toward 110,000 when its floating population is considered (Wikipedia, "La Grita", accessed 2026). Its economy is a first-rate agricultural engine: it supplies a large share of the vegetables consumed in the country (potato, tomato, onion, carrot) and adds strawberries, varied commerce, coffee and cereal mills, and solid dairy production.
