In the lowlands of Táchira state, where the plains heat reaches the foothills of the Andes, La Fría was born to the beat of the railway. It emerged in 1896 as a result of the construction and launch of the Great Táchira Railway; before that railway arrived it was a village known as Santísima Trinidad, dependent on Seboruco. Capital of the García de Hevia municipality, it preserves that character of a town that grew alongside the tracks and became an obligatory stopping point. La Fría is, today, an important connection point between Táchira, Zulia and the western plains.
La Fría is the capital of the García de Hevia municipality, which according to the 2011 census had 48,476 inhabitants, equivalent to 4.15% of Táchira state's population, of whom 24,564 were men and 23,912 women (Wikipedia, «Municipio García de Hevia», accessed 2026).
