Description
Esquque, traditionally known as Escuque, is one of the oldest documented settlements in the Venezuelan Andes and the capital of the Escuque municipality in Trujillo state. Its name comes from the aboriginal word "Skuke", which translates as "land of clouds" or "place of many feathers", a legacy of the Cuica people who inhabited these mountains long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Rebuilt in 1559, Esquque preserves a unique historical and cultural identity, with its square, its church and its cool highland climate, which establish it as a true meeting point of the Andean Trujillo.
The Escuque municipality has an approximate area of 165 km² and recorded a population of around 32,901 inhabitants according to the 2017 census (CriolloWiki, «Escuque», accessed 2026). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries it experienced a golden age driven by coffee exports, a period that left its mark on its architectural and educational heritage; today its economy combines farming activity with local trade.
