Description
Tocuyito is a city with deep historical roots in Carabobo state, capital of the Libertador municipality and integrated into the broad urban whole of Valencia. Its name was born in 1547, when the explorer Juan de Villegas saw these lands and called them «Tocuyo» —an indigenous word referring to cassava water— for their resemblance to another town in present-day Lara state; the diminutive «Tocuyito» remained forever. Very nearby, on the fields of Carabobo, the decisive Battle of Carabobo was fought on June 24, 1821, sealing Venezuela's independence, which gives Tocuyito a singular historical value and a role as a connection between the southern valley and the rest of the central region.
The Libertador municipality, whose capital is Tocuyito, spreads over some 558 km², making it one of the largest in Carabobo. According to the 2023 census, it gathered around 201,614 inhabitants, in an area of strong population growth where commerce, services, agriculture and the activity typical of the Valencia metropolitan area coexist (Wikipedia, «Municipio Libertador (Carabobo)», accessed 2026).
