Tacarigua is a coastal town in the Barlovento region, in eastern Miranda state, famous for sitting at the gateway to the Laguna de Tacarigua, one of the country's natural jewels. Its name comes from the Carib word for the balsa tree, a light wood that grows abundantly in these valleys near the sea. A community with a fishing tradition and deep Afro-Venezuelan roots, Tacarigua has been for generations a connection point between the coast, the lagoon and the rest of Barlovento, with its warm people, its drum music and its sea-bound cuisine.

Sea turtles and nearly 290 bird species live among its waters and mangroves, making the area a benchmark for ecotourism and artisanal fishing, the backbone of much of the local economy.
