San José de Barlovento is a town with an unmistakable flavor, capital of the Andrés Bello municipality, in the warm coastal region of Barlovento, in eastern Miranda state. Known as the cradle of cacao in Miranda lands, this town has made the cultivation of one of the world's finest cacaos not only its economic engine but also an essential part of its historical, cultural and environmental identity. Always linked to neighboring Río Chico —indeed it was once known as San José de Río Chico— San José de Barlovento is a natural connection point among the cacao-growing communities of eastern Miranda.
San José de Barlovento is the capital of the Andrés Bello municipality, which has a population of 23,127 inhabitants and an area of 114 km², yielding a density of 176.5 inhabitants per km² (Wikipedia, «Municipio Andrés Bello (Miranda)», accessed 2026). Founded in 1846 by brothers José and Román Imas together with their uncle Pedro Oderiz, it achieved its constitution as a town in 1900 and its municipal autonomy in 1982, preserving valuable architectural heritage such as the church of its patron saint, San José.
