Description
San Joaquín is a town with deep colonial roots in the eastern part of Carabobo state, capital of the municipality that bears its name and a historic waypoint along the country's central corridor. Its parish began operating in 1782 under the guidance of the presbyter Juan Rafael del Barrio, adopting the name San Joaquín de Mariara in honor of the father of the Virgin Mary; in 1796 its first church was raised on lands donated by Count Diego de Tovar. Overlooking Lake Valencia and surrounded by fertile valleys, San Joaquín keeps that air of a traditional town that over the years took hold as a connection point between Guacara, Mariara and the rest of the Carabobo region.
The San Joaquín municipality spreads over some 127 km², bordering Aragua state to the north and Lake Valencia to the south.
