Sheltered by the interior mountain range and surrounded by greenery that earned it the nickname "Ecological Capital of Venezuela", San Felipe is the heart of Yaracuy state. Founded in 1556 by Juan de Villegas and rebuilt after the devastating 1812 earthquake, it bears its name in honor of King Philip V of Spain. That history of collapse and rebirth shaped the character of its people: a city that remade itself and that today is the main economic, political and cultural center of the central-western region. San Felipe is also a natural connection point between the plains, the Caribbean coast and the Andean axis, with its parks and monuments standing as living witnesses to its long past.
San Felipe is the capital of Yaracuy state and of the municipality of the same name. According to the 2011 INE census, the city had about 161,308 inhabitants, while its metropolitan area —together with the Independencia and Cocorote municipalities— was around 323,771 inhabitants (INE, «Census 2011», accessed 2026).
