San Diego is a thriving city in the center-east of Carabobo state, integrated into the great urban whole of Valencia and known for its modern residential character and quality of life. Its earliest roots go back to the late 17th century, when indigenous families displaced from the El Paíto area settled these valleys; in 1777 the parish of San Diego passed to the jurisdiction of the Valencia district, a link that shaped its history until it became an autonomous municipality in 1994. The San Diego municipality covers some 106 km² and, according to the 2011 national census, gathered 93,257 inhabitants, representing around 4% of the population of Carabobo state.
