Punta de Mata
Punta de Mata, Monagas, Venezuela
Description
Punta de Mata is a young, thriving town in Monagas state that was born from oil activity and, in just a few decades, became one of the most dynamic centers in eastern Venezuela. As the capital of the Ezequiel Zamora municipality, it owes its growth to the arrival of hardworking families who settled in the area from the 1940s onward, drawn by the expansion of the oil fields. Today Punta de Mata retains that enterprising character and remains a key connection point in the region, where commercial and human movement never stops.
The Ezequiel Zamora municipality covers an area of 151 km² and, according to estimates from the National Institute of Statistics, reached a population of around 77,528 inhabitants in 2023 (Wikipedia, «Municipio Ezequiel Zamora (Monagas)», accessed 2026). Oil extraction is the foundation of its economy, although livestock and agriculture have endured, with crops of cereals, legumes and oilseeds that complement the productive life of the area.
