El Furrial
El Furrial, Monagas, Venezuela
Description
El Furrial is a parish of the Maturín municipality, in Monagas state, whose name and character are woven into the agricultural and oil history of the country's east. Its origin dates back to around 1870, when it was a meeting place for drovers and fighters of the civil wars; it is said that the word "furriel" —the person in charge of provisions in the stables— ended up giving the hamlet of El Furrial its name. From those hot savannas west of Maturín emerged a town that, over time, would become a decisive connection point for the Monagas economy.
El Furrial is one of the localities that make up the Maturín municipality. Its great leap came from 1985 onward, when PDVSA carried out explorations that led to the discovery of deep reservoirs; in 1986 the discovery well El Furrial-1X was completed at 4,565 meters depth, launching the largest onshore oil field found in Venezuela, which reached its production peak in 1998 (El Periódico de Monagas, "El Furrial: 153 years of history", accessed 2026). That boom transformed the town, drawing workers and energizing local commerce and services.
