Naguanagua
Naguanagua, Carabobo, Venezuela
Description
Naguanagua is a young and vibrant city in the heart of Carabobo state, fully integrated into the great urban conglomerate of Valencia. Its name comes from the chief Nagoanagoa, who dominated the area before the arrival of the colonizers, thus preserving an echo of its indigenous Carib and Arawak roots. Recognized as an ecclesiastical parish in 1782 under the patronage of Our Lady of Begoña, Naguanagua became an autonomous municipality in 1994. Today it is an important educational and residential hub —home to the University of Carabobo and several other institutions—, which makes it a connection point of great cultural and academic weight within the central region of the country.
The Naguanagua municipality spreads over some 275 km² and, according to the 2011 national census, gathered 157,437 inhabitants, equivalent to a little over 7% of the population of Carabobo state. Its economy combines commerce, services, intense university activity and a residential profile that has made the city one of the fastest-growing in the Valencia metropolitan area (Wikipedia, «Municipio Naguanagua», accessed 2026).
That urban and university vitality keeps Naguanagua in constant movement and exchange with the rest of Venezuela.
