Settled at the gateway to the lake that gives it its name, Maracaibo breathes a character all its own that sets it apart from any other Venezuelan city. Founded in 1529 by the German conquistador Ambrosio Alfinger as Nueva Núremberg, it grew to the rhythm of trade, of its port and, since the discovery of oil in 1914, of an industry that made it one of the world's petroleum capitals. As the capital of Zulia state and the country's second city, Maracaibo is a land of gaita music, intense sun and an unmistakable regional pride; its Lake Bridge, inaugurated in 1962, remains a symbol of unity and of the strength with which this city connects western Venezuela to the rest of the country.
According to the 2011 census, the city of Maracaibo had 1,459,448 inhabitants, while its metropolitan area —which brings together the neighboring municipalities around the lake— reached 2,356,959 inhabitants, consolidating it as the largest urban and economic center in western Venezuela.
