Description
Coro is one of the oldest and most emblematic cities in Venezuela. Founded on July 26, 1527 by Juan Martín de Ampíes, it was the first capital of the Province of Venezuela and seat of the first bishopric in South America. Its historic center, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 —the first Venezuelan site to receive that distinction— preserves a unique architecture blending indigenous, Mudéjar, Spanish and Dutch influences. Capital of Falcón state and of the Miranda municipality, Coro rises between the dunes to the north and the mountain range to the south, a semi-arid setting that gives it an unmistakable character and a central role as a connection point in the country's west.
According to the 2020 census, Coro has around 265,569 inhabitants, a figure that rises to nearly 313,428 in its metropolitan area, over an area of roughly 45 square kilometers.
