In the west of Lara state, where a dry climate and tradition intertwine, Carora holds one of the richest colonial histories in Venezuela. Founded in 1569 by captain Juan del Thejo as "Nuestra Señora de la Madre de Dios de Carora" and refounded in 1572 by Juan de Salamanca, it preserves a historic center of cobblestone streets, old churches and tile-roofed mansions that make it a pride of Lara's cultural heritage. Famous for its wines, its cattle ranching and its music, Carora is a vital connection point between Lara, Zulia, Falcón and Trujillo, and an emblem of its people's character.
