Description
Sarare is a city with a centuries-old history, capital of the Simón Planas municipality in the southeast of Lara State. Founded in 1716 by Fray Pedro de Alcalá under the name San Antonio de Sarare, its first settlers were families of the Atures tribe, joined by various indigenous peoples of the region. Set in the plains of the Sarare River, this city preserves a strong agricultural and community character, and has established itself as an important connection point and collection center for the harvests of southeastern Lara.
The Simón Planas municipality has a surface area of 808 km² and recorded a population of 38,605 inhabitants according to the 2011 census, while the city of Sarare concentrates about 16,398 inhabitants (INE, "2011 Census", accessed 2026).
