Villa del Rosario
Villa del Rosario, Zulia, Venezuela
Description
Villa del Rosario is the capital of the Rosario de Perijá Municipality, in Zulia state, a town of deep historical roots set at the foot of the Serranía de Perijá. Founded in 1722 by Juan de Chourio, it is recognized as the first populated center in the entire Perijá region, a pioneer of agricultural and livestock development in this western strip of the country. Villa del Rosario blends its colonial heritage with a strong plains and ranching character, and remains an essential connection point between Perijá and the rest of Venezuela.
Villa del Rosario holds a population of around 95,523 inhabitants, spread across an urban area of about 127 km² within a municipality covering 3,543 km² (Wikipedia, "Villa del Rosario (Venezuela)", accessed 2026). Its economy is sustained mainly by cattle ranching, of great regional weight, complemented by the cultivation of maize, cassava, and plantain, limestone extraction for the cement industry, and fishing activities.
