Description
Tinaquillo is a Cojedes city of great personality, set on a plateau near the Tamanaco River at around 420 meters of altitude. It was formally established on April 25, 1760 as Nuestra Señora del Socorro de Tinaquillo, although there were already settlements in the area from the late 17th century. During the independence wars it played a strategic role, since the Battle of Taguanes was fought nearby on July 31, 1813, where Bolívar defeated the royalist forces. Capital of the Tinaquillo municipality, its location along the Troncal 005 highway keeps it a natural pass-through and connection point between the center of the country and the plains.
According to 2021 census data, Tinaquillo has around 124,919 inhabitants and has experienced rapid urban and industrial growth due to its proximity to Valencia. Its economy revolves around the textile industry, agriculture, livestock and commerce, with a historical tradition in the production of cheese, milk and corn; in 2012 UNESCO recognized its Dancing Devils as intangible cultural heritage (Wikipedia, «Tinaquillo», accessed 2026).
