Description
San Carlos is a city of colonial roots and a calling as a regional center. Founded on June 7, 1678 by the Capuchin friar Pedro de Berja on the banks of the Tirgua River under the name San Carlos de Austria, it is today the capital of Cojedes state and of the municipality that bears its name. Set at around 152 meters of altitude in the high central plains, it preserves gems such as La Blanquera, an 18th-century Baroque colonial mansion turned into a museum, and the beloved Redoma del Mango that welcomes all who arrive. A meeting point of plains routes, San Carlos keeps alive that identity of a city both historic and modern.
By 2023, San Carlos had around 140,000 inhabitants and functions as the main administrative and commercial center of Cojedes.
