Santa Teresa del Tuy is a city with colonial roots in north-central Venezuela, capital of the Independencia municipality and one of the emblematic towns of the Tuy Valleys, in the southwest of Miranda state. Founded in 1761 and elevated to a parish a decade later under the name Santa Teresa de Jesús, it preserves the flavor of the Tuy towns, marked by their devotion, their October patron-saint festivities, and an identity tied to the land and to work. About 60 kilometers from Caracas, Santa Teresa serves as a key connection point between the capital and the rest of the Tuy Valleys.
Santa Teresa del Tuy had 138,776 inhabitants according to the 2016 census, with recent estimates placing it around 172,000 people (Wikipedia, "Santa Teresa del Tuy," accessed 2026).
