Its origins go back to the old Nuestra Señora de Altagracia de Pedraza, founded around 1591 in the Santa Bárbara mountains by captain Gonzalo Piña Ludueña, accompanied by residents from Mérida and Barinas. Over the centuries, the town experienced relocations and refoundings until it consolidated as present-day Ciudad Bolivia, capital of the municipality that still bears the name Pedraza.
