On the banks of the Santo Domingo river, in the very heart of the western plains, Barinas beats to the rhythm of llanera music and the vastness of its savannas. Capital of the state of the same name and known as the "Marchioness City", it was founded in 1577 by captain Juan Andrés Varela as Altamira de Cáceres, and after several relocations settled in its current site in 1762. A cradle of joropos, verbal duels and legends, Barinas is the main economic and cultural center of the Venezuelan plains and a natural connection point between the Andes, the country's center and the border with Colombia.
