Fondly known as «the Garden City», Maracay spreads its layout across the central valley of Aragua, between mountains and lush vegetation. Officially established on March 5, 1701 by Bishop Diego de Baños y Sotomayor in the valleys of Tocopio and Tapatapa, its name evokes the maracayo, a small wildcat of the region. The city underwent its great transformation during the era of Juan Vicente Gómez, who made it his residence and endowed it with squares, gardens and monuments such as the Arc of Triumph and the Hotel Jardín. As the capital of Aragua state since 1917, Maracay is today an important industrial, military and aeronautical center, and a natural connection point between the country's center and the Llanos.
Maracay had around 600,035 inhabitants according to the 2011 census, placing it among the most populous cities in Venezuela.
