Few Venezuelan towns are as widely known by name as Maiquetía, the town in La Guaira state that the whole country associates with its main gateway to the world: the Simón Bolívar International Airport. Set on a narrow shelf between the Caribbean Sea and the mountains, about 37 kilometers from Caracas, Maiquetía was founded on January 20, 1670 under the name San Sebastián de Maiquetía.
