Las Virtudes is a peaceful, hardworking town, capital of the María de la Concepción Palacios y Blanco parish, in the Tulio Febres Cordero Municipality of Mérida State. Set in the warm valley of the Chirurí River, in the state's Pan-American region, Las Virtudes has grown to the rhythm of the agricultural and commercial activity that characterizes the area south of Lake Maracaibo. Its people preserve the warmth and rootedness typical of Mérida's lowland communities, and the town serves as a natural connection point between neighboring localities and the main roads that link Mérida with the rest of western Venezuela.
Las Virtudes belongs to the Tulio Febres Cordero Municipality, which spans an area of 787 km² and which, as of 2020, exceeded 41,185 inhabitants together with its parishes Independencia, Santa Apolonia, María de la Concepción Palacios y Blanco and Nueva Bolivia (Wikipedia, «Tulio Febres-Cordero Municipality», accessed 2026). The local economy is based on the agriculture and livestock typical of the fertile Pan-American plain, at around 480 meters above sea level.
