Description
La Guardia is a historic town of artisanal fishermen located in the Zabala parish of the Antonio Díaz Municipality, on Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta State. Its roots go back to the region's first inhabitants: until around the year 1600 it was known by the indigenous name «Caranta Maura», and later as «El Bufadero», after the roar of the sea crashing against its rocky coast. It adopted its current name on July 21, 1765, when a «Guard Post» was established there to protect the area from pirates and curb smuggling. Today, overlooking the imposing La Guardia Inlet, which forms part of the La Restinga National Park, La Guardia preserves its seafaring identity and remains a living connection point among the towns of western Margarita.
