Los Bagres is a hamlet of ancient roots in the Díaz Municipality, on Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta State, located about 8 kilometers from San Juan Bautista, the municipal capital. In colonial times it was known as «Sitio de Fuentes», and popular tradition holds that its current name comes from a well that existed in the area, where large catfish (bagres) were bred. Set at a low elevation above sea level, Los Bagres preserves the serene flavor of the towns of inland Margarita and, due to its proximity to the municipal capital and other communities, it plays the role of a connection point within the region's daily life.
