Description
Guanare is known as the spiritual capital of Venezuela, and rightly so. Founded on November 3, 1591 by the Portuguese Juan Fernández de León, it is one of the few cities in the Americas that preserves its founding deed. Its greatest symbol is the devotion to Nuestra Señora de Coromoto, whose apparition to the indigenous people in these plains more than three centuries ago led Pope Pius XII to declare her patroness of Venezuela in 1950. Capital of Portuguesa state, this plains city —also nicknamed the Athens of the Plains for its cultural life— is a meeting point of faith, tradition and routes in the heart of western Venezuela.
According to 2020 data, the Guanare municipality gathers around 241,050 inhabitants across a broad area of approximately 1,721 square kilometers, making it the most populous in Portuguesa.
