Description
Araure is a city with deep plains roots in northeastern Portuguesa state, historically twinned with neighboring Acarigua to form one of the region's main urban hubs. Its founding charter dates to July 6, 1694, when Spanish colonizers established it near the Quebrada de Armo; two years later it was moved to the bank of the Quebrada de Araure, its current location, in search of better water. In 1778, Bishop Mariano Martí visited it and named it Villa de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Araure. Today Araure preserves that historic, heritage character and stands as a vital connection point among the towns of the foothills and the Portuguesan plain.
As the capital of the Araure Municipality, the city sits on a territory of about 640 km² and is the second most populous municipality in the state. According to the 2011 census, the municipality had 151,334 inhabitants, equal to 17.27% of Portuguesa's population (Wikipedia, «Municipio Araure», accessed 2026). Divided into the Araure and Río Acarigua parishes, its economy draws on commerce, agro-industry and the farming and livestock activity typical of the western plains.
