El Tocuyo is one of the oldest and most beloved cities in Lara state, proudly known as «the Mother City of Venezuela». Founded in 1545 by Juan de Carvajal, it became the capital of the province, and from its fertile valley departed the expeditions that gave rise to cities such as Caracas and Valencia. Birthplace of the famous lienzo tocuyo fabric and of the Golpe Tocuyano, El Tocuyo preserves a deep cultural identity and a historic role that keeps it an essential connection point within central-western Venezuela.
