El Maco is one of those towns on Margarita Island where time seems to have stopped to protect its roots. Its name comes from the «maco» tree that grows abundantly in the area, and local memory holds that Simón Bolívar and his troops rested beneath its shade. Those born here are proudly called «maqueros», heirs to an identity forged among the craft of shoemaking, the customs inherited from Castilian settlers, and devotion to their patron saint San Lorenzo.
