Ejido, formally known as San Buenaventura de Ejido, is one of the most important cities in Mérida state and the capital of the Campo Elías municipality. Founded on July 14, 1650 by Captain Buenaventura de Bustos Baquero, it holds centuries of history that have taken it from a simple colonial parish to a thriving city, elevated to that status in 1876. Its name comes from the ejidos, or common lands, near the city of Mérida, with which it maintains a close relationship. Part of the Mérida metropolitan area, Ejido is today a dynamic connection point within the Venezuelan Andes.
Ejido's growth has been remarkable: from just over 20,000 inhabitants in 1981 it rose to more than 99,837 inhabitants according to the 2011 census, establishing itself as the third most populous municipality in Mérida state (Wikipedia, «Ejido (Mérida)», accessed 2026). Its economy, closely tied to that of the state capital, combines commerce, services and the agricultural activity typical of the Andean valleys, making it a vital center for the region.
