In the valley of the Aragua River, just minutes from Maracay, Cagua keeps the flavor of the old towns that grew beside water and fertile land. Its origins date back to November 26, 1620, when the doctrine town of San José de Cagua was founded, later relocated to the savanna by the river in search of better water. Its name comes from the Indigenous word «Caguacao», «the village of the snail», a nod to the region's native roots. As the capital of the Sucre municipality, Cagua is part of the Greater Maracay conurbation and a connection point between the agricultural valleys of Aragua and the industrial dynamism of the country's center.
Cagua has a surface area of 76 km² and a population of around 152,233 inhabitants according to 2023 estimates, historically integrated into the Maracay metropolitan area.
