Description
Arapuey is the capital of the Julio César Salas municipality, in Mérida state, an Andean town with agricultural roots that spreads between the slopes of the mountain range and the lowlands approaching Lake Maracaibo. Its origins date back to the first decades of the 20th century, when the families that shaped the village began to settle, and its growth took hold after the construction of the Pan-American Highway, which connected it to the movement of the country's western region. Arapuey keeps the charm of mountain towns, with its well-kept Plaza Bolívar as the heart of community life, and remains an important connection point within its region.
The Julio César Salas municipality covers an area of 202 km² and, according to estimates from the National Institute of Statistics, had a population of around 17,937 inhabitants in 2010 (Wikipedia, «Municipio Julio César Salas», accessed 2026). Agriculture is the area's main economic activity, with crops geared above all toward the production of coffee, cocoa, fruit and vegetables, complemented by a significant livestock sector.
