Surrounded by the vast network of channels of the Orinoco delta, Tucupita is the gateway to one of the most singular landscapes in Venezuela. Founded around 1848 by settlers from Margarita and the states of Sucre and Monagas, it was named capital in 1887 and has since shaped the life of a region crossed by water, stilt houses and jungle. As the capital of Delta Amacuro state, Tucupita is the urban heart of the Warao homeland, that Indigenous «people of the canoes» who inhabit the banks of the delta. More than a city, Tucupita is a connection point between the mainland world and the river labyrinth that flows into the Atlantic, where Indigenous and Creole cultures intertwine.
Tucupita is the capital of Delta Amacuro, a state created in 1991 that, for the 2011 census, recorded around 86,487 inhabitants among Creole and native populations, joined by the ancestral presence of the Warao people, who numbered more than 36,000 according to the 2001 Indigenous census. Its economy is sustained by administrative activity as a capital, fishing, agriculture, Warao craftsmanship and the commerce that supplies the communities scattered across the delta's channels (INE, «Censo 2011», accessed 2026).
