Description
Machiques is a cattle-ranching, border-region city, capital of the Machiques de Perijá municipality, in the southwest of Zulia state. Set against the foothills of the Sierra de Perijá, it is known as the gateway to that imposing mountain range and as one of Venezuela's great livestock and cheese-making centers. Its roots date back to the mid-eighteenth century, and ever since Machiques has been a meeting point between the Zulia plains, the indigenous communities of the Sierra, and the routes that connect the state with the rest of the country. That blend of agricultural tradition and cultural diversity defines its warm, hardworking identity.
