El Tigre
El Tigre, Anzoátegui, Venezuela
Description
El Tigre is a young, thriving city in the south of Anzoátegui state, capital of the Simón Rodríguez municipality and known as the first oil city of eastern Venezuela. Founded in 1933 amid the boom of the wells on the Guanipa tableland, its growth was marked from the start by hydrocarbon activity. Equidistant from the Orinoco River and the Caribbean Sea, El Tigre has established itself as an important commercial and industrial connection point between the plains, the Orinoco Oil Belt, and the rest of the eastern region.
According to the 2011 census, the Simón Rodríguez municipality, whose capital is El Tigre, has a population of around 194,858 inhabitants, spread across a surface area of roughly 703 km² (Wikipedia, "El Tigre", accessed 2026). Its economy is strongly tied to the oil sector and its associated services, as well as to the commerce that has flourished thanks to its strategic location and its status as an activity hub in southern Anzoátegui.
