Description
Calabozo is a plains city with a historical and agricultural weight hard to match in Guárico. Founded on February 1, 1724 by the missionaries Bartolomé de San Miguel and Friar Salvador de Cádiz, it was formally erected as Villa de Todos los Santos de Calabozo in 1774 and became the first capital of Guárico state. Today it is the capital of the Francisco de Miranda municipality and sits at around 105 meters of altitude, about 260 kilometers southwest of Caracas. Its character as a center of the plains, surrounded by vast savannas and irrigation systems, makes it a natural reference point for the entire central plains region.
According to 2023 projections, Calabozo is home to around 161,492 inhabitants across an area of roughly 52 square kilometers, with a mostly urban population.
